The common outer jacket materials for appliance power cords are PVC, TPE, silicone, and rubber, each with its own suitable applications as well as advantages and disadvantages.
PVC is the most widely used material for standard power cords. It is low-cost, resistant to abrasion and tensile stress, offers good insulation, has moderate hardness, and holds its shape well, making it suitable for a wide range of common household appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, and rice cookers. Its drawbacks include mediocre cold‑ and heat‑resistance—becoming brittle and cracking at low temperatures—average environmental performance, and a tendency to age and harden with repeated bending.
TPE material is an eco-friendly, soft‑to‑the‑touch polymer that feels smooth and supple, with excellent toughness. It resists yellowing and cracking, withstands repeated bending, and offers superior aging resistance, while being odorless and safer for use. It’s commonly used in charging cables, fans, and small household appliances. Even at low temperatures, it remains flexible, and its recyclability makes it more environmentally friendly. Its only drawback is that it’s slightly more expensive than PVC.
Silicone power cords boast exceptional high‑temperature resistance, withstanding temperatures exceeding 180°C. They are extremely flexible, oil‑resistant, and highly flame‑retardant, remaining intact without melting at elevated temperatures. Primarily suited for high‑temperature appliances such as ovens, air fryers, and electric ceramic cooktops, they do have the drawbacks of moderate abrasion resistance and relatively higher costs.
Rubber power cords are exceptionally tough, oil‑ and drop‑resistant, and highly resistant to tensile stress, with excellent waterproofing and weather resistance. They’re ideal for appliances that require frequent dragging, bending, and moving—such as vacuum cleaners, high‑speed blenders, and power tools—and are also commonly used in outdoor appliances. Their drawbacks include a somewhat stiff feel and relatively heavy weight.
The key differences among the four materials lie in their softness, heat resistance, cold resistance, and durability. When choosing, select based on the appliance’s operating temperature and frequency of use.
